N8n vs Zapier: Which One Is Best in 2026?

The short answer to n8n vs Zapier in 2026: Zapier wins for non-technical teams that want 9,000+ apps and zero servers to manage. n8n wins for technical teams building complex or AI-heavy workflows, because it bills per execution instead of per step and can run on your own infrastructure. As of August 25, 2026, that is the whole decision in two sentences. The rest of this comparison shows the numbers behind it: real 2026 pricing, Zapier’s June 2026 AI pricing change, and where each platform breaks down.

The differences that decide it, at a glance:

What’s the real price difference between Zapier and n8n in 2026?

On pricing, n8n beats Zapier for any workflow with more than a few steps: €20 a month buys 2,500 full workflow executions on n8n’s 2026 Starter plan, while Zapier’s Professional plan starts at $19.99 to $29.99 for 750 tasks. The unit matters more than the sticker. n8n charges per execution regardless of how many steps run inside it. Zapier charges per task, so a 12-step Zap burns through its allowance twelve times faster than a one-step one.

Here’s how n8n’s cloud pricing plans stack up in 2026:

n8n planMonthly price (2026)ExecutionsStandout inclusions
Community EditionFree (self-hosted)UncappedFull source access, roughly $4 to $10/month for a VPS
Starter€202,500Unlimited users and workflows
Pro€5010,000Unlimited users and workflows
Business€66740,000Self-hosted option, SSO/SAML/LDAP, Git-based version control
EnterpriseCustomCustomCustom terms

“You should never be penalized for building complex workflows.” That’s n8n’s own framing on its official comparison page, and on unit economics it holds up.

Zapier’s side, per Zapier’s published 2026 pricing: Free gives 100 tasks a month with single or two-step Zaps only. Professional scales from 750 tasks into the thousands of dollars at 2 million tasks. Team runs $69 to $103.50 a month for 2,000 tasks across up to 25 users.

Then there’s the change that caught a lot of teams off guard this summer. Under Zapier’s model-based AI pricing, effective June 15, 2026, AI steps now cost a multiple of the base task price: Standard at 1x, Advanced at 3x, Premium at 5x. Advanced is the default, and it’s the tier that enables tool use. So an AI-heavy Zap can quietly cost triple what its task count suggests unless you bring your own model account, which drops it back to 1x. Credit where due: the 75-task-per-run safety cap is a sensible guard against runaway agent spend.

Two honest caveats before calling this for n8n. The gap between Pro at €50 and Business at €667 is a cliff, and there’s nothing in between. And Zapier’s counterargument, that self-hosted n8n hides its real cost in infrastructure and engineering hours, is self-serving marketing that also happens to be partly true. If nobody on your team wants to babysit a server, that $5 VPS isn’t actually free.

Zapier’s 9,000+ apps vs n8n’s open integration model

On integration breadth, Zapier wins outright. Zapier connects to more than 9,000 apps as of 2026, its integrations are maintained centrally, and when a vendor changes an API, Zapier fixes the connector in the background without you noticing. For a marketing or ops team, that maintenance guarantee is worth real money.

n8n plays a different game. Its native library sits at 500+ built-in integrations, with the company citing 1,000+ once universal connectors (HTTP, GraphQL, webhooks) are counted, and a community node ecosystem stretching further still. In practice, the HTTP Request node is the feature that keeps rescuing projects: when we hit an obscure logistics API with no connector on either platform, on n8n it was a fifteen-minute detour, while on Zapier it would have meant building and maintaining a custom integration. That flexibility is a big part of why n8n tops most 2026 lists of Zapier alternatives for engineering teams.

The trade: community-built n8n nodes can lag on updates, a point Zapier makes loudly and n8n concedes quietly. Centrally maintained beats community-maintained for reliability. Universally extensible beats a fixed catalog for coverage. Pick your poison.

AI agents and MCP: the new front line in n8n vs Zapier

On AI, it’s close, so the tiebreaker is who’s driving: n8n gives developers more control over agents, while Zapier gets a non-technical user to a working agent faster. Both companies spent 2025 and 2026 rebuilding themselves around agents, and both landed on the same open standard underneath.

The receipts, side by side:

  • n8n’s agent stack: an AI Agent builder with memory, tool use, and guardrails on the workflow canvas, connections to OpenAI, Anthropic Claude, Google Gemini, and self-hosted models, plus native RAG support. A built-in MCP server ships in every edition, including the free one, and since an April 2026 update an external AI client can build and edit n8n workflows directly.
  • Zapier’s agent stack: Zapier Agents, now generally available, act across the full 9,000-app catalog with guardrails, memory, and bring-your-own-model support. Zapier MCP has logged 195,000+ servers created and 4.6 million+ tool calls per the company’s most recent published figures.
  • The shared foundation: Anthropic donated the Model Context Protocol on December 9, 2025 to the vendor-neutral Agentic AI Foundation under the Linux Foundation, co-founded with OpenAI and Block. By then MCP had passed 97 million monthly SDK downloads.

Investors have picked their read on this race. n8n closed a $180 million Series C in October 2025, led by Accel with NVIDIA’s NVentures participating, at a $2.5 billion valuation. Zapier disclosed no comparable 2025 or 2026 round; the revenue and valuation figures floating around the trade press are third-party estimates, so treat them as rough.

One pattern from building agents for clients: the platform matters less than whether the agent’s failure modes are inspectable. n8n’s canvas makes an agent’s reasoning path something you can debug step by step. Zapier’s Agents trade that transparency for speed of setup. For a weekend prototype, take Zapier. For an agent touching customer data in production, we’d want n8n’s visibility, or code.

Security and data control: Zapier’s cloud vs self-hosted n8n

On certifications, it’s a tie; on data control, n8n wins the moment your data can’t leave your own infrastructure. Both platforms hold SOC 2 Type 2 and SOC 3 reports with GDPR compliance in 2026, so the audit-checkbox conversation ends even.

The architecture conversation doesn’t. Per Zapier’s security and compliance page, Zapier runs on AWS in the United States with TLS 1.2+ in transit and AES-256 at rest, and its Enterprise tier adds SAML SSO, SCIM provisioning, and immutable audit logs. One detail buried in the fine print deserves daylight: automatic exclusion from AI model training applies to Enterprise customers, while everyone else has to opt out manually. Go flip that setting today.

n8n’s answer is structural. Because the Community Edition and Business plan self-host, credentials, data, and workflow logic can stay entirely inside your own network, backed by annual independent audits and Standard Contractual Clauses documented in n8n’s Trust Center. The catch, which Zapier’s marketing states bluntly and accurately: self-host and the security burden is yours, patching, uptime, and all. n8n’s Sustainable Use License keeps the source visible and self-hostable while barring resale as a competing hosted service, which is why its repository has climbed to roughly 202,000 GitHub stars.

For our healthcare and financial-services clients, this section alone usually settles the vote.

Where n8n and Zapier honestly fall short

Neither platform survives contact with real workloads unscathed, and their scars are different shapes.

Zapier’s weak spots in 2026:

  • Task-based n8n cost comparisons get ugly at volume: a high-frequency, multi-step workflow that costs €50 flat on n8n Pro can climb into four figures on Zapier’s task ladder.
  • AI steps default to the 3x Advanced multiplier under the June 2026 pricing, so agentic Zaps cost more than their task count implies.
  • No self-hosting exists at any price, and hosting is US-based on AWS, which is disqualifying for some regulated and data-residency-bound buyers.
  • AI-training data exclusion is automatic only on Enterprise.

n8n’s weak spots in 2026:

  • The learning curve is real. Non-technical users who build a Zap in ten minutes will spend hours on their first n8n canvas.
  • The native connector catalog (500+ built-in) is a fraction of Zapier’s 9,000+, and community nodes update on irregular schedules.
  • The €50-to-€667 jump between Pro and Business leaves mid-sized cloud teams stranded between tiers.

Count those lists again. Zapier’s problems are mostly about money and control. n8n’s are mostly about effort. That asymmetry is the entire comparison in miniature.

n8n vs Zapier: who should choose which in 2026

The right pick maps cleanly onto who’s building and what the volume looks like.

Choose Zapier if: your builders are ops, marketing, or sales people rather than engineers; your workflows are mostly under five steps; your task volume sits comfortably inside the 750-task Professional or 2,000-task Team allowances; and you’d rather pay for maintained connectors across 9,000+ apps than manage anything yourself. Teams of 5 to 25 non-technical users get to their first working automation fastest here, full stop.

Choose n8n if: you have at least one person comfortable with APIs and a terminal; your workflows branch, loop, call custom endpoints, or embed AI agents; you run thousands of executions a month and want cost to stay flat as complexity grows; or compliance requires data to stay on your infrastructure. For engineering teams pricing out an alternative to Zapier in 2026, n8n’s free self-hosted Community Edition makes the trial cost roughly a $5 VPS.

Consider neither if: automation is your product rather than your plumbing, latency and reliability carry SLAs, or agents need behavior no visual canvas expresses cleanly. That’s the point where teams move to custom orchestration in code. It’s the tier we work in at AlphaCorp AI when we take on production AI agent builds, and the honest advice is that most teams should exhaust n8n before paying for it.

A note on switching: the two platforms model workflows differently enough (Zaps against canvas graphs, tasks against executions) that migrating means rebuilding by hand. Budget for that before committing either way.

How to test n8n and Zapier for yourself this week

Skip the feature matrices. Run this instead:

  1. Price your real workload. Take your three highest-volume workflows, multiply steps by monthly runs, and price that number against Zapier’s 2026 task tiers and n8n’s execution tiers. The winner is usually obvious within ten minutes.
  2. Flag every AI step. Under Zapier’s June 2026 rules each one defaults to 3x task cost, so an agent-heavy roadmap changes the math fast.
  3. Spin up both free tiers. Zapier’s 100-task free plan and a self-hosted n8n Community instance cost you one afternoon combined.
  4. Rebuild your ugliest workflow on each. The platform that survives your worst case will handle the rest.

If that test reveals workflows too critical or too strange for either tool, that’s a signal worth acting on. Talk to us and we’ll tell you plainly whether you need custom engineering or just a €20 n8n plan.
