The best AI chatbot for e-commerce in 2026 is three products, one per layer: an assistant such as ChatGPT or Copilot for discovery, Shopify Sidekick or Salesforce Agentforce for merchant operations, and Intercom Fin or Ada for post-purchase support. Read on for the shortlist, what each layer charges, where the bots still fail, and the seven numbers that show whether yours is paying off. As of September 10, 2026, every major assistant can complete a purchase, and most merchants are still keeping checkout on their own domain.

  • 49% of US adults used AI chatbots in 2026, up from 33% in 2024 (Pew Research Center, June 2026, n=5,119)
  • AI-referred traffic to US retail sites rose 393% year over year in Q1 2026 (Adobe)
  • In-chat checkout inside ChatGPT converted roughly three times worse than a click-through to walmart.com in 2026 (Walmart, via Retail Dive)
  • Intercom Fin’s average resolution rate reached 76% across 8,000+ customers in 2026 (Intercom)
  • 68% of retailers plan to deploy agentic AI within 12 to 24 months, per the January 2026 NRF and IBM study of 18,000 consumers

Best AI Chatbot for E-commerce in 2026: Our Shortlist at a Glance

The best AI chatbot for e-commerce in 2026 depends on which job you’re hiring it for, because the market has split into three layers that barely overlap: discovery agents inside general assistants, merchant copilots inside your storefront platform, and post-purchase resolution agents. No single product does all three well. Anyone selling you one “best ecommerce chatbot” for the whole customer journey is selling a category that stopped existing sometime in 2025.

Here’s the shortlist, sorted by layer.

ToolLayerBest for (2026 verdict)
ChatGPT (OpenAI)DiscoveryReaching new customers; checkout now runs through merchant-built apps after the March 2026 pullback
Google Gemini + Universal CartDiscoveryShoppers who bounce between Search, YouTube and Gmail; one persistent cart since I/O 2026
Microsoft CopilotDiscovery + checkoutShopify merchants, who were auto-enrolled in Copilot Checkout at its January 2026 launch
Perplexity ShoppingDiscovery + checkoutOne-click Instant Buy via PayPal; roughly 45 million monthly users in early 2026
Alexa for Shopping (formerly Rufus)Discovery (Amazon only)Marketplace sellers; 250 million shoppers used it in the year to May 2026
Shopify SidekickMerchant copilotShopify stores that want admin work automated and their catalog pushed into other assistants
Salesforce Agentforce for CommerceMerchant copilotEnterprise B2C and B2B on Commerce Cloud; Shopper, Buyer and Merchant Agents went GA in July 2026
Intercom FinPost-purchase supportTeams that want to pay per resolved ticket; 76% average resolution rate across 8,000+ customers
AdaPost-purchase supportEnterprise CX at volume; self-reports 84% autonomous resolution
In-house assistant (the Klarna model)Post-purchase supportCompanies with the engineering staff to build and run their own

Why no overall winner? Because the scorecards differ. A discovery agent is judged on referral traffic and new-customer rate. A merchant copilot is judged on hours saved in the back office. A support agent is judged on resolution rate, a metric every vendor defines its own way. Comparing Perplexity to Intercom Fin is like comparing a billboard to a returns desk.

The stakes are large either way.

AI and agents influenced 20% of global online holiday sales in 2025, worth $262 billion, according to Salesforce’s 2025 holiday shopping data from its Commerce Cloud network.

That number comes from a vendor with agents to sell, so treat it as directional. Even at half that share, the discovery layer is too big for a mid-size brand to ignore, and the support layer is where the payroll savings sit.

One pattern to hold onto while reading any verdict below: discovery is moving into the assistants, and the purchase is staying on the merchant’s own systems. Walmart’s 2026 decision to put its Sparky assistant inside ChatGPT while keeping checkout on walmart.com is the cleanest example of where the whole market is heading.

How AI Chatbots for E-commerce Work in 2026, From Product Discovery to Post-Purchase Support

AI chatbots for e-commerce in 2026 work as a chain of three connected systems: a catalog feed that makes your products visible inside general assistants, a payment rail that lets an agent complete a purchase with the shopper’s permission, and a support agent that handles whatever goes wrong after the order ships. Each link has its own protocol and its own vendors. Here’s the plumbing.

Discovery starts with catalog syndication. A shopper types “waterproof trail shoes under $150” into ChatGPT or Perplexity. For your product to appear, the assistant needs a structured, current feed of your catalog. Shopify’s Agentic Storefronts, released in the Winter ’26 Edition, push a merchant’s catalog into ChatGPT, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot with a per-platform on/off toggle. Salesforce’s Shopper Agent does the same job for Commerce Cloud stores into ChatGPT and Google’s AI Mode.

Checkout runs on agentic commerce protocols. Three matter in 2026:

  • Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP): built by OpenAI and Stripe in September 2025, it lets an assistant hand a complete order to the merchant’s checkout. It launched with Etsy and Shopify sellers.
  • Agent Payments Protocol (AP2): Google’s protocol, announced September 2025 with more than 60 partners including PayPal, Mastercard and American Express. Cryptographically signed “Mandates” let an agent prove a real person authorized the purchase. Version 0.2.0 in April 2026 added “Human Not Present” payments for time-limited buys such as ticket drops, and Google handed the protocol to the FIDO Alliance that same month.
  • Shared Payment Tokens (SPT): Stripe’s primitive that lets an agent pay on a buyer’s behalf without seeing raw card details. Per Stripe’s shared payment token documentation, tokens can be scoped by merchant, amount or time window and revoked at will. Since March 2026 they also cover Visa, Mastercard, Affirm and Klarna credentials.

Underneath all of this sits the merchant of record question. In Microsoft’s Copilot Checkout design, the shopper pays inside the conversation but the retailer remains the legal seller, so fulfilment, refunds and service still belong to you. Most of the market has settled on that arrangement.

A vertical four-step flow of an e-commerce AI chatbot purchase in 2026. Step one, discovery inside the assistant: a shopper prompts ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot or Perplexity, with the catalog supplied by Shopify Agentic Storefronts (Winter '26 Edition) or Salesforce Shopper Agent (generally available July 2026). Step two, checkout on an agentic rail: the Agentic Commerce Protocol from OpenAI and Stripe (September 2025), Google's Agent Payments Protocol (September 2025, version 0.2.0 with Human Not Present payments and donation to the FIDO Alliance in April 2026), or Stripe Shared Payment Tokens (extended to Visa, Mastercard, Affirm and Klarna in March 2026). Step three, the merchant of record fulfils the order and stays the legal seller, as in Microsoft Copilot Checkout from January 2026. Step four, a post-purchase resolution agent handles WISMO, returns and refunds, where Salesforce measur
The last link carries the fastest-growing load: Salesforce measured a 142% rise in AI-handled post-purchase tasks across November and December 2025. Source: Stripe agentic commerce documentation, 2026.

Post-purchase support is a separate agent with a separate job. Once the order exists, the questions change: where is my order (WISMO, in support jargon), can I return it, why was I charged twice. Resolution agents such as Intercom Fin and Ada connect to your order management and helpdesk systems to answer those without a human. The volume is real. Salesforce measured a 142% jump in AI-handled post-purchase tasks such as returns and shipping status across November and December 2025.

That third layer is the one with the least dependency on which assistant wins the discovery war. For many merchants it’s the sensible place to begin.

What Does the Best AI Chatbot for E-commerce Actually Cost in 2026?

The best AI chatbot for e-commerce in 2026 costs anywhere from no separate line item (a copilot bundled into a platform you already pay for) to a per-resolution fee on every support ticket the bot closes on its own. There’s no single price sheet, because the three layers charge in three different ways.

Four pricing models you’ll actually meet:

  1. Per resolution. Intercom bills Fin only when the AI closes a conversation without a human, and Intercom’s published Fin outcomes for 2026 put the average at 76% resolution across 8,000+ customers, improving about a point a month. So roughly three in four tickets carry a fee. What surprises teams the first time is that the bill peaks in exactly the weeks your return volume does.
  2. Platform-bundled. Shopify Sidekick ships inside the Shopify admin. Salesforce’s Shopper, Buyer and Merchant Agents sit on top of Commerce Cloud. The chatbot cost folds into the platform contract instead of appearing on its own line, which makes it easy to under-count.
  3. Channel and payment fees on agentic checkout. Selling through Copilot Checkout, Perplexity Instant Buy (processed by PayPal) or ChatGPT’s merchant apps means paying whatever the payment rail charges. Per-transaction pricing for those channels isn’t published in one place, so model it as your processor’s rate plus whatever terms you negotiate.
  4. Build your own. Klarna’s assistant, built on OpenAI models and launched in February 2024, is still the reference case. Its 2024 figures remain the most cited by 2026: the workload of about 700 full-time agents, two-thirds of customer-service chats resolved, and resolution time cut from roughly 11 minutes to under 2.
Four headline figures for Klarna's AI assistant, all reported for 2024. The assistant handled the workload equivalent of about 700 full-time agents, the emphasised figure. It resolved two-thirds of customer-service chats. Average resolution time before the assistant was about 11 minutes. Average resolution time with the assistant was under 2 minutes.
Klarna’s assistant took on the workload of about 700 full-time agents and cut average resolution time from roughly 11 minutes to under 2. Source: OpenAI, 2024.

Then there’s the cost that never makes a pricing page. Klarna later rehired human agents after customer-experience pushback, as CX Dive reported, so the 700-agent saving ended up smaller than the headline. Budget for the people who catch escalations.

Budget for the wiring too. Order lookups, refund APIs, inventory checks: a bot that can’t see your order data is a FAQ page with a typing indicator, and connecting those systems is usually the bulk of any custom chatbot build. The model call is the cheapest line in the budget. The integrations and the fallback staff are the expensive ones.

How the Leading E-commerce Chatbots Compare on Shopify, WooCommerce and Headless Integrations

The leading e-commerce chatbots in 2026 integrate deepest with Shopify and Salesforce Commerce Cloud, because both platforms own the catalog feed and the checkout rail that the assistants plug into. Everyone else, WooCommerce and custom headless stores included, gets the protocols and has to build the connections.

Shopify has the shortest path. Agentic Storefronts, part of the Winter ’26 Edition, syndicate a store’s catalog into ChatGPT, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot from a single admin, with a switch per platform. Shopify merchants were also auto-enrolled in Copilot Checkout at its January 2026 launch (opt-out available), and Shopify sellers were in the first cohort for ChatGPT’s Agentic Commerce Protocol flow through Stripe in September 2025. Sidekick sits on top of all that for admin work.

Salesforce has the deepest enterprise stack. The Agentforce for Commerce release of July 2026 took Shopper Agent (B2C on-site recommendations and agentic search), Buyer Agent (B2B business search and headless flexibility) and Merchant Agent to general availability, with native integration into ChatGPT and Google Search’s AI Mode, and the Gemini app announced but pending. If you run a headless build on Commerce Cloud, the B2B stack is the only one on this list designed for it out of the box.

Google AI Mode / Universal CartFeed-dependentNative via Shopper AgentFeed-dependent; AP2 for payments
Intercom Fin / Ada (support)Helpdesk and order-API connectorsHelpdesk and order-API connectorsSame connectors, more custom mapping

WooCommerce and headless stores get a different deal. Neither Google, OpenAI nor Microsoft publishes a WooCommerce-specific syndication path, so a WooCommerce merchant in 2026 needs a structured catalog feed for each assistant, a payment integration that speaks ACP or AP2 (Stripe’s Shared Payment Tokens are the pragmatic route, and since March 2026 they cover Visa, Mastercard, Affirm and Klarna credentials), and an order API a support agent can read.

That’s three build projects. None is enormous alone, but together they’re why so many custom-stack brands end up commissioning an agent build with the integrations included instead of assembling vendor pieces. The support layer is the least platform-bound of the three: Fin and Ada care about your helpdesk and order data, and they don’t much care which storefront sits in front of it.

Which E-commerce Chatbot Fits Your Store Size and Sales Model

The e-commerce chatbot that fits your store depends on your size and where your orders come from: small Shopify stores should switch on what Shopify already ships, mid-market brands should add a support agent, enterprises should own checkout while renting discovery, and marketplace sellers mostly have the choice made for them.

Five merchant profiles, in rough order of size:

  • Small Shopify DTC store: Turn on Agentic Storefronts, keep Copilot Checkout enrolment unless it hurts, and let Sidekick handle admin chores. Don’t buy a separate support agent until ticket volume justifies a per-resolution bill.
  • Mid-market multi-channel brand: Syndicate the catalog everywhere, then pilot Intercom Fin or Ada against post-purchase questions. Salesforce’s 2025 holiday data showed AI-handled post-purchase tasks up 142% in November and December, and mid-market brands feel that spike in headcount first.
  • Enterprise retailer: Copy the Walmart 2026 pattern. Put your own assistant inside ChatGPT for discovery, keep the purchase on your domain, and stay merchant of record on every channel.
  • B2B seller: Salesforce’s Buyer Agent is the only shortlisted tool built for business search and headless B2B. Everything else on the list is consumer-shaped.
  • Marketplace-dependent seller: If Amazon is your channel, Alexa for Shopping is your chatbot whether you like it or not. Your work is catalog quality, because that’s what the assistant reads.

Now the counterintuitive part. Most stores don’t need full autonomy yet, and the data says most aren’t buying it.

The OECD’s 2026 report on the twin transition of retail SMEs found that AI adoption in wholesale and retail concentrates in marketing, sales and workflow automation rather than in transactional autonomy. Small merchants use AI to write product copy, target promotions and clear admin queues. Very few hand it the till.

That matches what happens in practice. The first thing a five-person store gets from an AI copilot is time back, and the first thing an enterprise gets is a new traffic source. The purchase itself is the last thing either of them delegates. Pick the layer that returns the most hours or the most new customers for your size, and leave autonomous checkout for when you can measure it.

Where E-commerce Chatbots Still Fail: Hallucinated Prices, Refund Loops and Escalation Gaps

E-commerce chatbots in 2026 still fail in four predictable places: in-chat checkout that converts worse than your own site, resolution rates that mean whatever the vendor says they mean, automation pushed past the point customers tolerate, and missing disclosure or escalation paths that regulators now watch.

In-chat checkout underperforms. Walmart found checkout completed inside ChatGPT converted roughly three times worse than a click-through to walmart.com, even though ChatGPT delivered a higher new-customer rate than search, per Retail Dive’s 2026 report on Walmart’s Sparky-in-ChatGPT move. That’s the whole trade in one number: the assistant finds better customers and then loses them at the payment step. OpenAI’s March 2026 shift from universal Instant Checkout to merchant-built apps reads as an admission of the same thing.

Resolution rate is a vendor-defined number. Intercom reports 76%. Ada self-reports 84%. Klarna’s assistant resolved two-thirds. None of those figures are audited, and none share a definition. A bot that closes a chat by pasting a returns policy link has “deflected” the ticket, and some dashboards count that as resolved. A bot that actually issues the refund has resolved it. Until an industry standard exists (and in 2026, none does), the cross-vendor “X% vs Y%” comparison in any sales deck is close to meaningless.

Automation past the tolerance line. Klarna rehired human agents after customer pushback against its AI-first model. The refund loop is the classic symptom: a customer with a case the bot can’t handle gets routed back to the bot, because the escalation path was sized for the bot’s happy path instead of its failures. Anyone who has run a helpdesk knows the angry ticket is the one that escaped the queue.

Trust and disclosure are measurable, and regulated. The 2024 BMC Psychology study on interactivity, humanness and trust in e-commerce chatbots found trust, driven by interactivity and perceived humanness, mediates whether shoppers act on a bot’s advice. Research in Internet Research (Emerald) found the effect flips with task complexity: simple tasks favour the bot, complex ones erode trust unless the bot discloses it’s AI and shows a clear exit to a human. A 2023 Electronic Markets study found chatbot design even shifts how shoppers perceive price fairness, which is a strange amount of power to hand an unsupervised system.

The regulators noticed. The FTC’s chatbot guidance tells operators to clearly and prominently disclose when a consumer is talking to an AI, and warns against outputs that misrepresent products or exploit trust for commercial gain. NIST launched its AI Agent Standards Initiative on February 17, 2026, aimed squarely at identity, credentialing and authorization for agents that can move money. Hallucinated prices and phantom stock levels are the version of that risk a merchant meets first, and no protocol fixes them. Only a bot grounded in live order and inventory data does.

What Changed in E-commerce AI Chatbots This Year: Agentic Checkout, Voice and Multimodal Search

What changed in e-commerce AI chatbots between September 2025 and September 2026 is that every major assistant gained a way to complete a purchase, the payment protocols behind those purchases moved into a standards body, and chatbot use crossed half of US adults. Twelve months earlier, none of that was true.

The dated version:

  • September 2025: OpenAI and Stripe launch Instant Checkout inside ChatGPT for Etsy and Shopify sellers. Google announces AP2 with more than 60 payment partners.
  • January 8, 2026: Microsoft launches Copilot Checkout and Brand Agents at NRF, with PayPal, Shopify, Stripe and Etsy as launch partners.
  • March 2026: OpenAI steps back from universal in-chat checkout in favour of merchant-built apps. Walmart’s Sparky arrives inside ChatGPT for paid-tier users. Stripe extends Shared Payment Tokens to Visa, Mastercard, Affirm and Klarna.
  • April 2026: AP2 v0.2.0 adds “Human Not Present” payments. Google donates the protocol to the FIDO Alliance, which opens Agentic Authentication and Agentic Payments working groups on April 28 and folds in Mastercard’s “Verifiable Intent” framework.
  • May 2026: Amazon renames Rufus to Alexa for Shopping in the US on May 13, putting its shopping assistant under its voice-assistant brand. Google shows Universal Cart at I/O.
  • July 6, 2026: Salesforce takes Shopper, Buyer and Merchant Agents to general availability.

Amazon’s numbers are the loudest of the year. Amazon says 250 million shoppers used its assistant in the year to May 2026, monthly active users rose 140% year over year, interactions rose 210%, and it expects an extra $10 billion in annualized sales, with engaged shoppers 60% more likely to buy. Those are company-disclosed figures. Perplexity, for its part, reported about 45 million monthly users in early 2026 and a fivefold rise in shopping-intent queries after opening Instant Buy beyond Pro subscribers.

Shoppers moved just as fast. The Pew Research Center’s June 2026 “Americans and AI” survey, fielded February 17 to 23 among 5,119 US adults, found 49% now use AI chatbots, up from 33% in 2024 and 23% in 2023. Some 44% use ChatGPT specifically. One in four uses a chatbot daily.

A column chart of the share of US adults who use AI chatbots, from Pew Research Center. In 2023 the share was 23%, in 2024 it was 33%, and in 2026 it reached 49%, the emphasised column. The 2026 wave was fielded February 17 to 23 among 5,119 US adults.
49% of US adults used AI chatbots in 2026, more than double the 23% recorded in 2023. Source: Pew Research Center, 2026.

That usage is showing up in retail traffic. Adobe measured AI-referred visits to US retail sites up 693% year over year across the 2025 holiday season, and still up 393% in the first quarter of 2026. In Adobe’s consumer survey, 39% said they had used AI to shop online, and 85% of those said it improved the experience. The National Retail Federation’s January 2026 study with IBM, covering 18,000 consumers, found 45% turn to AI for shopping help even though 72% still shop in physical stores, and 68% of retailers plan to deploy agentic AI within 12 to 24 months.

The two-thirds of retailers planning to deploy are the story. The traffic is already here.

How to Measure Whether Your E-commerce Chatbot Is Paying Off

You measure whether your e-commerce chatbot is paying off with seven numbers, three for the discovery layer and four for support, each compared against a baseline you recorded before the bot went live. Skip the baseline and every vendor dashboard will look like a win.

KPILayerWhat to compare it against
AI-referred sessionsDiscoveryYour own prior period; Adobe saw AI referrals to US retail up 393% year over year in Q1 2026
Conversion of AI-referred trafficDiscoveryAdobe found AI referrals converted 31% better than other sources in holiday 2025
New-customer rate by channelDiscoveryWalmart found ChatGPT beat search on this in 2026
Resolution rate, your definitionSupportYour own month-one figure; Intercom’s fleet average was 76% in 2026
CSAT, bot versus humanSupportParity; Klarna’s assistant matched human agents
Resolution timeSupportKlarna cut it from about 11 minutes to under 2
Post-purchase tasks handled by AISupportSalesforce saw 142% growth in November to December 2025

Write your resolution definition down first. A workable one: the customer’s request was fulfilled (refund issued, order located, return label sent), no human touched the conversation, and the customer didn’t reopen it within a window you fix in advance. Then count only against that. Your number will come in below the vendor’s headline, and that’s the number you can defend to a CFO.

CSAT parity is the guardrail. If the bot’s satisfaction score drifts below the human team’s, you’ve found the tolerance line Klarna crossed before it rehired agents, and you found it early.

The checkout A/B is the one most merchants skip. Syndicate the same catalog to the same assistant, then split shoppers: half get in-chat checkout, half get a link to your own site. Compare conversion per shopper who reached the payment step, new-customer rate, and refund rate over a full return window. Walmart ran a version of this test in 2026 and moved checkout home.

Nothing here needs a new tool. It needs the baseline, an honest definition, and someone who owns the spreadsheet. If you’re auditing a bot that’s already live and nobody recorded the “before”, an AI integration audit that reconstructs that baseline from historical tickets and analytics is the fastest way to get a real answer.

Frequently Asked Questions About AI Chatbots for E-commerce

What is the best AI chatbot for e-commerce in 2026?

There is no single best AI chatbot for e-commerce in 2026, because the market has split into discovery agents, merchant copilots and support agents. For reaching new shoppers, ChatGPT, Copilot, Perplexity and Gemini are the channels that matter. For back-office work, Shopify Sidekick or Salesforce Agentforce depending on your platform. For post-purchase support, Intercom Fin or Ada, judged on a resolution rate you define yourself.

Do e-commerce chatbots increase sales?

Yes, on the evidence available in 2026, chiefly through referral traffic. Adobe found AI-referred visitors converted 31% better than other traffic sources during the 2025 holiday season, and Amazon projects its assistant will add $10 billion in annualized sales. Those figures come from parties with a stake in the answer, so run your own channel comparison before budgeting against them.

Can shoppers buy directly inside ChatGPT?

Shoppers can buy inside ChatGPT, but the path changed in March 2026. OpenAI moved away from a universal Instant Checkout toward merchant-built apps within ChatGPT, after Walmart found in-chat checkout converted roughly three times worse than a click-through to walmart.com. Many merchants now use ChatGPT for discovery and send the purchase to their own site.

The FTC’s chatbot guidance tells operators to clearly and prominently disclose when a consumer is interacting with an AI, and warns against outputs that misrepresent products or exploit trust. Whether a specific omission is unlawful depends on the facts and on enforcement that was still taking shape in 2026. The commercial case for disclosure is settled anyway: research in Internet Research found trust erodes on complex tasks when the bot hides what it is.

What is agentic commerce?

Agentic commerce is shopping where an AI agent researches, compares and completes a purchase on a person’s behalf, using protocols that prove the person authorized it. In 2026 the main rails are OpenAI and Stripe’s Agentic Commerce Protocol, Google’s AP2 (now under the FIDO Alliance), and Stripe’s Shared Payment Tokens. The merchant usually stays merchant of record.

How much does an e-commerce chatbot cost per month?

There is no standard monthly price for an ecommerce chatbot platform in 2026. Support agents such as Intercom Fin charge per resolved conversation, platform copilots such as Sidekick and Agentforce are bundled into the platform contract, and agentic checkout channels cost whatever the payment rail charges per transaction. The integration work and the human escalation team usually cost more than the software.

Where to Start With Your E-commerce Chatbot Shortlist

Start your e-commerce chatbot shortlist by picking one layer, switching on what your platform already ships, and piloting a single support agent against a resolution metric you wrote down yourself. Four moves, in order:

  1. Choose the layer you need first. New customers means discovery. Hours back means a merchant copilot. Payroll relief means post-purchase support. Pick one for the next quarter.
  2. On Shopify, flip the Agentic Storefronts toggles and keep Copilot Checkout enrolment on. It costs nothing to try and the traffic is already looking for you.
  3. Pilot one resolution agent, Fin or Ada, for 90 days, counting only tickets that meet your own definition of resolved.
  4. Keep checkout on your own domain until your split test proves in-chat conversion holds up. Walmart couldn’t make that case in 2026. You probably can’t yet either.

Do those four things and you’ll know, with your own numbers, which ecommerce chatbot platform deserves the bigger budget. If the wiring to order data, refunds and inventory is the part standing in the way, that’s the part AlphaCorp AI builds.
